His foresight and keen interest in the ICT industry won him recognition and trust by the Government of His Majesty to represent Brunei in several high-ranking international and regional ICT meetings. He represented Brunei in the 3rd Informal ASEAN Summit in Manila along with the other ASEAN leaders in early 2000. He was a member of the e-ASEAN Task Force. He was appointed as Deputy Chairman – Industry of InfoCom Federation Brunei, a non-profit national body dedicated to growing and nurturing the local Information Technology and Communications (InfoCom) industry from 2007 till 2010.

In September 2002, through his leadership and guidance Syabas Technologies won the Special Mention Award from Asia-Pacific Australian Information Communication and Technology Awards (APICTA) 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In December 2003, Syabas Technologies with its business partner IBM, was awarded an e-Government turnkey contract to develop and implement the PMONet Enterprise Data Center Project for the Office of The Prime Minister (PMO) of The Government of Brunei Darussalam. Syabas Technologies also won the Best Software Integration Award among ICT companies in Malaysia by IBM.

Sheikh Abas has made significant contribution towards the promotion and development of private sector in Brunei. He was the former President of National Chamber of Commerce & Industry Brunei Darussalam (NCCIBD). In 1997, he was appointed as Business Adviser for the Young Enterprise Scheme and in year 2000 he was appointed as a member of Advisory Council during the APEC CEO Summit meeting.

Sheikh Abas is also highly experienced in the field of media. He is the sole owner of Shazana’s House of Photography which has won Best Camera Award (2000), Best Promo (2002), Best Camera Work (2003-2004), Best Editing Work (2003-2004) and Best Documentary (2003-2004). He has received professional training from the BBC in London (1980) while being employed as Production Officer at Radio Television Brunei and has been awarded the Brunei Shell Journalism Award (1997).

He now sit as board member at Municipal Board & Motor Landtransport Authority which are both appointed by His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

In his spare time away from business, Sheikh Abas is a certified open water diver. His love of the water is matched by his passion for four-wheel drive (4WD) adventure, where he has traveled through China, Inner Mongolia and from Kuala Lumpur to London. He recently led a 4WD convoy joining the 1st India Asean Rally 2004, covering 8,200km using Brunei’s registered car starting from India all the way to Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, in which the Brunei contingents won the Best Team Award besting more than 264 participants from India and ASEAN. An avid photographer, he has collected an extensive photo portfolio of the people and places he has visited.

Sheikh Abas is married with 5 children.
